Just combine lime wedges, caster sugar, mint, ice cubes and soda and enjoy!Today’s recipe is special not only because tomorrow is the first day of spring and I celebrate with a glass or two of non-alcoholic mojito, but also because it’s time to think about your summer holidays! Isn’t it exciting? I was thinking about seafood destinations and I’d love to introduce you to the Key West district, a part of The Florida Keys archipelago.

The Florida Keys has kindly provided me with the information about the amazing food scene of the Key West district. If you are a fish lover and a fusion food fan like me, it’s a real paradise for you! Just imagine: palm lined streets, Hemingway used to walk along, vibrant sidewalk cafes that lure in passersby with delicious scents of their specialties, live music and hopping bars to watch the sunset into the Gulf of Mexico with a glass of mojito.

The Key West food scene is dominated by fresh seafood as well as African and Cuban flavors, that are difficult to find anywhere else in the US. Must visit: Three Hands Fish, a community supported fish market, where you can find the freshest and sustainable fish, shrimp, stone crabs, and lobster that come in on the docks. The Stoned Crab, a seafood restaurant with the freshest fish, is located right there on the dock. It serves up some of the best of what Key West is known for, the stone crab, but they also do it in a stunning setting with an unbeatable view of the water. The restaurant keeps alive the tradition of the fishermen bringing their catches straight to the dock, something that is no longer happening in other areas.

And now something really exciting: To learn how to prepare the seafood, you can take a class at Isle Cook where Paul Menta of Three Hands Fish, a professional chef and community advocate, will teach you how to cook local recipes and healthy meals with seafood!

When visiting Key West, be sure to try fish you wouldn’t otherwise be able to. Considered local to Key West are the Hogfish, Mangrove Snapper, and as of late the Lion Fish. The Hogfish is caught by spear fishing, which is a fun challenge to try. The fish is served whole and is affectionately called the Key West Turkey, stuffed with lobster, onions, and herbs.

Local specialties include conch fritters, which is fried conch meat that’s actually native to the Caribbean and grouper fritters, made of grouper mixed with carrots, onion and a traditional Key West seafood seasoning. The fritters are fried until golden and are perfect inside of a sandwich or as an appetizer by the water.

Key West 2If you are dreaming about your holidays like this, while it’s still cold and rainy outside and summer seems so far away, just treat yourself with a glass of non-alcoholic mojito! It’s just as good as the one with rum, with the difference that children can drink it and adults won’t have hangovers on the next day. Also, it’s super easy to make: mix caster sugar, lime wedges and mint leaves, muddle everything with a pestle, add some ice and splash the soda water. 5 minutes, 5 ingredients, 5 stars! Ingredients

  • 1 lime
  • 4 teaspoons caster sugar
  • 6 sprigs mint + more to garnish
  • 200 grams or around 1 cup ice cubes
  • 230 ml or 1 cup soda water

Instructions

  • Cut the lime into 4 wedges. Put 2 wedges in each glass, add caster sugar and mint leaves and muddle everything with a pestle. Add ice cubes and soda water. Garnish with mint leaves. Enjoy!
