Kale smoothies are a nutritional powerhouse and this kale smoothie recipe is one of the easiest, most delicious you'll make!

Green smoothies are a wonderful way to nourish your body, detox it, and ensure you're getting all the nutrition you need.

While a kale weight loss smoothie may not sound delicious, it can indeed be made to taste delicious.

Many associate dark green, nutrient-dense food with bitter or at least savory and they're not wrong. 

However, this delicious kale smoothie recipe breaks the rules and is a somewhat sweet, totally delish treat to enjoy for a breakfast, quick lunch, or satisfying snack in the middle of your day.

Kale is a real nutritional powerhouse, being packed with unique nutrients such as powerful antioxidants, lutein, vitamin A, C and most importantly vitamin K, as well as iron, calcium, and dietary fiber...all while containing zero calories.

  • kale
  • banana
  • peanut butter
  • maple syrup
  • lemon juice
  • almond milk
  • sea salt
  • water (optional)

How to Prep Kale

If your kale has hard ribs, discard them using kitchen scissors. Transfer the leaves to the blender.

How To Make This Delicious Kale Smoothie

The trick to taking a somewhat bitter and unorthodox smoothie ingredient and making it a part of a delicious and slightly decadent smoothie is the ingredients you add to it.

Adding fresh bananas will make it smooth and creamy. Or you can plan ahead and freeze your banana for a creamy chilled effect, much like adding a scoop of ice cream.

Peanut butter and maple syrup add the sweetness and some extra layers of flavor to make your taste buds happy. 

Lemon juice adds some vitamin C, makes the iron in the kale more easily absorbed by your body, and adds a slightly tart note to balance the sweetness from the banana, peanut butter, and maple syrup.

I use almond milk to thin it, although you could use whatever milk alternative you keep on hand.

Then, simply blend all the ingredients in a blender, add a bit of ice or water to adjust the consistency if you want it thinner, and a pinch of salt to balance the taste. Check my kale smoothie web story for the instructions.

  • Don't underestimate a pinch of sea salt. It balances the taste of this smoothie making it just right!
  • Use water to thin up the smoothie to your liking.
  • If you have leftover kale, use it for kale pumpkin salad, vegan casserole with sweet potatoes and kale, harvest salad, buddha bowl or vegan zuppa toscana. You can also add it to vegan wild garlic soup.

  • Use any type of kale for your green smoothie. Most common are curly kale and Tuscan (Lacinato) kale. Here are some more kale varieties that you might want to consider.
  • Fresh spinach can be substituted for kale for a delicious green smoothie.
  • Use any other sweetener instead of maple syrup: agave juice, date syrup or molasses. You'll need less sweetener if you use ripe bananas.
  • If you don't want to add the sweetener, toss 2 or 3 Medjool dates instead.
  • Use frozen banana for a creamy chilled effect.
  • You can use lime juice in place of lemon juice.
  • Any nut milk or oat milk can be substituted for almond milk.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup or 70 grams kale
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or any other sweetener of your choice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup or 230 ml unsweetened almond milk or any other nut milk
  • water or ice optional
  • a pinch of sea salt

    This looks amazing Elena! Whenever I blend greens I end up chewing my smoothie so im looking for a new blender. I noticed you recommend the Philips but it looks like that one is no longer available. I've been looking into the Vitamix 5300 after reading this https://livingfreshdaily.com/vitamix-5200-vs-5300-which-is-best/ and I was wondering if you think thats a good choice or what blender you would recommend besides the Philips? Thanks!

      Hi Lauren! I know what you mean. Chewing your smoothie means it's time for a new blender 🙂 I still use Philips and I can't say anything about Vitamix because I haven't use it. I know people who own Blendtec Designer Series Blender which is a bit cheaper than Vitamix but does a great job. I tried it myself and I'm thinking about purchasing one. Hope that helps!
